Acrylic vs Melamine vs Resin: Mahjong Tile Materials Compared
Factory owner Wei Liang compares acrylic, melamine, and resin mahjong tiles with real cost, weight, durability, and yellowing data from the production floor in Shenzhen.
I run a mahjong tile factory in Shenzhen. Over the past twelve years my team has molded more than ten thousand tiles across three material families: acrylic, melamine, and resin. I have pressed each material myself, listened to the sound they make on a table, weighed every variant on a digital scale, and run them through our abrasion tester until the engraving wore flat. This article shares the real numbers from our production floor so you can pick the right material for your playing style and budget.
What Each Material Actually Is
Acrylic (PMMA)
Acrylic tiles are made from polymethyl methacrylate, the same polymer used in aquarium walls and aircraft windows. In our factory we buy PMMA granules at roughly $4.20 per kilogram. The raw pellets are transparent; color pigment is blended in before molding. The result is a dense, glassy tile with a slight translucence that makes the engraved characters easy to read under overhead light.
Melamine
Melamine is a thermoset compound — formaldehyde-melamine resin mixed with cellulose filler. Once it cures under heat and pressure, the molecular structure locks permanently. You cannot remelt it. That locked structure is what gives melamine its exceptional hardness. Raw melamine compound costs us about $2.80 per kilogram, making it the cheapest of the three materials we work with.
Resin (Polyester Resin)
Resin tiles use unsaturated polyester resin poured into silicone molds and cured at room temperature or with mild heat. We pay roughly $3.50 per kilogram for the resin compound. Resin is popular among boutique brands because it allows complex inlay designs — embedded coins, dried flowers, holographic film — that compression molding cannot achieve. But the trade-off is weight and long-term stability.
Manufacturing Process Differences
The way each material is shaped explains many of the differences you feel during play.
Compression Molding: Acrylic and Melamine
Both acrylic and melamine tiles go through compression molding. We load pre-measured granules into a steel mold cavity, close the press, and heat the mold until the material flows into every engraved groove.
The parameters differ:
- Acrylic: mold temperature 165 degrees Celsius, curing time 12 minutes per mold cycle. One machine produces roughly 50 tiles per hour.
- Melamine: mold temperature 150 degrees Celsius, curing time 4 minutes per mold cycle. One machine produces roughly 150 tiles per hour.
That eight-minute gap in curing time is the main reason acrylic sets carry a higher price tag. Lower throughput means higher per-unit labor and machine cost, on top of the raw material premium.
Cast Molding: Resin
Resin tiles are cast, not pressed. We pour liquid resin into silicone molds and let it cure at approximately 120 degrees Celsius for 8 minutes per batch. Because the molds are flexible silicone rather than steel, the setup cost is low — which is why small studios can produce resin tiles without investing in a hydraulic press. The downside: cast tiles have more internal bubbles, and the surface is softer than a compression-molded tile.
Durability and Scratch Resistance
I test every material batch before shipping. Our abrasion tester rubs a weighted felt pad across the tile face in a back-and-forth cycle, simulating the friction of shuffling and wall-building. Here are the averages from our last three production quarters:

Melamine wins both tests by a wide margin. After 500 cycles our melamine samples still show crisp engraving lines with no surface fogging. Acrylic holds up well for 300 cycles but begins showing micro-scratches around the 280 mark. Resin starts showing visible surface dulling at roughly 200 cycles.
The drop test tells you how a tile handles an accident — a rack tipped off a table, a tile knocked onto a hard floor. Melamine tiles bounce and survive a 1.5-meter drop onto concrete with only minor edge chips. Acrylic tiles survive 1.2 meters but can crack if they hit a corner first. Resin tiles fracture more easily; at 0.8 meters roughly one in eight tiles chips or splits.
If you play weekly in a busy club where tiles get shuffled hard and occasionally dropped, melamine is the safest bet. For gentle home play, acrylic is more than durable enough. Resin suits collectors who display more than they shuffle.
Weight and Feel
Tile weight changes how the game feels in your hands — how a tile sits on your rack, how the wall stacks, how satisfying the discard motion is. I weighed each material on our calibrated bench scale, using the standard American tile size (roughly 31 mm x 23 mm x 15 mm):

Melamine is the lightest. A full set of 166 melamine tiles weighs about 1.63 kilograms. Some players prefer this lightness — the tiles are easy to handle for extended sessions, and they suit older hands or anyone with wrist fatigue.
Acrylic sits in a comfortable middle zone. At 12.6 grams each the tiles have enough presence to feel substantial without tiring your hands during a two-hour session.
Resin is the heaviest. Because polyester resin is less dense than PMMA or melamine compound, the tiles need extra thickness or filler to reach the same structural integrity. A resin tile at 15-18 grams feels chunky. Some players love the weight — it makes the discard feel decisive. Others find a full resin set fatiguing after the third hour.
Sound: Click, Clack, or Thud
Sound matters more than most buyers realize. Mahjong players identify tiles by ear as much as by sight — the sound of a tile hitting the table tells you the material before you look down.
- Acrylic produces a crisp “click.” The sound is bright, short, and resonant. Players who like a lively, musical table prefer acrylic. In a quiet room the clicks are distinct and easy to distinguish.
- Melamine produces a sharp “clack.” Harder and slightly more percussive than acrylic. The clack cuts through background noise, which is useful in a crowded community center or club where several tables are running simultaneously.
- Resin produces a dull “thud.” The softer surface absorbs vibration instead of reflecting it. If you play in a library-quiet living room and want minimal noise, resin has that advantage. In a group setting the thuds blend together and can make it harder to track discards by sound.
Yellowing Risk Over Time
This is the durability question I hear most from customers, and the one where misinformation is common. Let me give you the data from our own aging tests and from feedback we track across 400+ customer sets.
Acrylic Yellowing
High-grade PMMA acrylic — the grade we use — resists yellowing for 8 to 10 years under normal indoor lighting. We keep control samples under fluorescent shop lights (8 hours per day) and check them quarterly. After four years the tiles show zero perceptible color shift on a spectrometer.
Cheap acrylic is a different story. Some suppliers blend PMMA with polystyrene or use recycled acrylic pellets to cut costs. Those blends yellow in 2 to 3 years because the impurities oxidize under UV exposure. If you see an acrylic set priced well below the market average, question the grade. Melamine Yellowing
Melamine is a thermoset. Once cured, the polymer network is locked and far less reactive to UV. Our melamine tiles show no yellowing after 6 years in our aging cabinet. The cellulose filler can slightly darken over a decade if the tiles are stored in direct sunlight, but the shift is subtle and rarely visible on ivory-colored tiles. For players who keep their set in a case between sessions, melamine yellowing is essentially a non-issue.
Resin Yellowing
Resin yellowing is the real problem. Unsaturated polyester resin oxidizes faster than either acrylic or melamine. Our aging tests show measurable color shift on resin tiles after just 12 months under continuous indoor light. Under direct sunlight — a set left on a windowsill — resin tiles can yellow noticeably in 6 to 8 months.
The chemical reason: polyester resin contains styrene monomers that continue to react slowly after curing. Those post-cure reactions produce chromophore groups that absorb blue light, making the tile appear yellow. UV accelerates the process. If you buy a resin set, store it in its case and keep it away from windows.
Cost Comparison
Raw material cost is one factor. Production throughput — how many tiles a machine can press per hour — is the other. Here is the full cost breakdown per tile from our production floor, calculated on a per-unit basis for a 166-tile American set:

Melamine is the cheapest to produce by a clear margin — roughly 43% of the per-tile cost of acrylic. That gap is why most budget and mid-range sets use melamine tiles. Acrylic commands a premium because the raw material is more expensive and the slower curing cycle drives up labor cost. Resin sits in the middle on material cost but can be more expensive at retail because boutique brands add design labor and smaller batch inefficiencies.

Customization Options
Acrylic
Acrylic supports the widest color range. Because PMMA granules blend evenly with pigment, we can produce tiles in pastel pink, deep navy, translucent amber, and any Pantone code a customer requests. Engraving depth is consistent at 0.3 mm, and the smooth surface accepts pad-printed logos or laser-etched monograms cleanly.
Melamine
Melamine colors are limited. The thermoset reaction restricts pigment compatibility — we reliably produce ivory, black, red, and dark green. Custom Pantone colors are possible but require a 5,000-tile minimum order because each color batch must be compounded separately. Engraving is deep (0.4 mm) and extremely crisp, which is why melamine tiles look sharp even after years of play.
Resin
Resin is the customization champion. Cast molding lets you embed objects inside the tile: pressed coins, dried flower petals, holographic film strips, even small LED circuits for glow-in-the-dark sets. Surface inlay — gold leaf, mother-of-pearl veneer — is also possible because the soft resin surface accepts adhesive bonding. Which Material Should You Choose?
Daily Club Play
Melamine. The 500+ cycle scratch rating, the 1.5-meter drop survival, and the zero yellowing risk make melamine the workhorse material. If your set lives in a community center locker and gets shuffled four times a week, melamine tiles will look almost new after five years. The sharp clack sound is easy to hear in a noisy room.
Home Play (2-3 Sessions per Week)
Acrylic. The weight is comfortable for casual sessions, the click sound is satisfying, and 300-cycle scratch resistance is plenty for home use. Acrylic’s translucence makes the tile faces easy to read under kitchen or living room lighting. You pay more, but the set looks and feels premium for years.
Gift or Collector Display
Resin. If the set will sit on a shelf more often than on a table, resin’s customization options make it the standout choice. Embedded art, inlay designs, and heavy chunky weight give resin sets a presence that photographs beautifully. Accept the yellowing risk and store the set in its case between showings.
Seniors or Players with Wrist Sensitivity
