- 166 tiles. American mahjong uses 152 standard tiles (dots, bams, cracks, winds, dragons, and the 1–9 honors) plus 8 jokers and 8 flowers/seasons. If a set claims 144 tiles, that is a Chinese set — wrong game. Beginners must start with 166.
- Four racks. One per player, to hold your 13–14 tiles face-down and tidy.
- Four pushers. The little wedges that slide your rack forward when it is your turn — a small thing that makes a huge difference to game flow.
- A carrying case. Usually a soft or hard case that holds all 166 tiles plus racks and pushers.
- A mat (recommended). Padded, non-slip, often with a printed guide line. Not always “in the box,” but worth buying alongside the set.
When you see a listing that says “American mahjong set with mat and racks,” that is the full, ready-to-play bundle — and for a beginner it is the least-friction choice. You open the box, roll out the mat, and you are playing.
The one thing beginners forget: the card
Here is the catch nobody tells you. Unlike Chinese mahjong, where the winning hands are fixed, American mahjong changes its legal hands every single year. The rulebook is the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card, published annually (the 2026 card is current as of this writing).

Do you need the mat? (Most beginners say yes)
A mat is the quiet MVP of a peaceful game night. Tiles clack loud on a bare table; a padded mat absorbs the sound and the bounce. It also keeps tiles from sliding when someone bumps the table, and the printed line helps four players build a straight, even wall.

The core loop is simpler than it looks: on your turn you draw a tile, then discard one. You are trying to assemble a hand that matches one of the published patterns on the card — a “pung” (three of a kind), a “kong” (four), a “chow” (a run), plus the year’s special combinations. The first player to complete a legal hand calls “Mah Jongg!” and wins the hand.
Beginner set vs deluxe set: which should you buy?
This is the question every first-timer asks, and the answer is reassuring:
- A standard beginner set plays the exact same game as a deluxe set. Same 166 tiles, same rules, same card.
- Deluxe upgrades feel, not function: heavier acrylic tiles with a more satisfying snap, a rigid case, engraved or weighted racks, sometimes a nicer mat.
- For a first personal set, standard is perfect. For a gift, a studio, or a tournament, deluxe earns its price.
