NMJL Mahjong Set: What You Need (166 Tiles + Current Card)

If you have shopped for an “American mahjong set” you have probably hit a wall of similar-looking options — and if you plan to play by National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules, only one spec actually matters. This guide explains what an NMJL mahjong set is, why the tile count is fixed at 166, and how to make sure the set you buy (or source for resale) is League-ready.
What “NMJL-compliant” really means
The NMJL is the body that standardizes American mahjong in the United States. Its rules differ from Chinese mahjong in scoring, the Charleston, and the use of a yearly card. To play by those rules you need:
- 166 tiles — the standard suits (dots, bams, cracks), winds, dragons, 8 jokers, and 8 flower/season tiles.
- English labels — numbers and suits printed in English so US players read them at a glance.
- The current year’s card — a separate paper or PDF that lists the valid hands for that season. The set is reusable; the card changes annually.

Why 166 tiles (not 144)
Chinese mahjong uses 144 tiles. American mahjong adds 8 jokers plus 8 flower/season tiles to reach 166, which the League’s hands and scoring require. A 144-tile “Chinese” set will not work for NMJL play — a common beginner mistake. If you are equipping a club, senior center, or resale shelf, confirm the 166 count before ordering.
The card is not optional

- Tile count — confirm 166, including 8 jokers.
- Labels — English numbers and suits.
- Feel — tiles should be a uniform weight and size; melamine is the budget-friendly default, acrylic the premium upgrade.
- Card — current-year NMJL card included or available.
- Consistency — if you buy for a group, identical sets mean any tile fits any case.
