Why the setup matters
American mahjong needs a square wall in the center and four racks around the edge. If the table is too small or the tiles slide, the wall collapses mid-game. A stable surface and a mat solve both problems before they start.
Step 1 — Choose the surface
Pick a flat, stable table at least 32–33 inches (80–85 cm) square. A dining table works perfectly. If you only have a round table, add a 32” mat so the wall has a defined square to sit on.
Step 2 — Lay the mat
Center a Quiet Padded Mahjong Mat (32” x 32”) on the table. The felt top dampens tile clatter and the non-slip backing keeps everything planted during the Charleston.
Step 3 — Seat four players
Seat four players on the four sides, each with a tile rack in front of them. American mahjong is a four-player game, so the table layout assumes four seats.
Step 4 — Sort the tiles
Open the set and sort the 166 tiles. Keep the 8 jokers and the flower/season bonus tiles together so they are easy to place during play.
Step 5 — Build the wall
